Devon Blade A Star Saga Story eBook Ken McConnell
The author got the terminology right, along with the feel of a WW2 P-47 Thunderbolt fighter squadron except now on a far-off planet. The P-47 must have been a model for the author in describing the Swift. I enjoyed the story, and now I'm going to have to find the first book, "Starforgers".Product details

Devon Blade A Star Saga Story eBook Ken McConnell Reviews
This short novel is stocked with well written characters, inhabiting non stop action. The highest praise I can give it is. "I loved this story as much as I enjoyed my favorite TV series. Baa Baa Black Sheep. Aka Black Sheep Squadron". It features a demoralized Space Fighter squadron, fighting an enemy with superior equipment in an island based campaign on an alien planet. It shows the reader all the blood, and ,sweat and struggle of an air war. The constant question you ask yourself is "How are they going to beat this overwhelming enemy. The suspense is well written from the introduction to the final forlorn hope. The resolution of the same is really satisfactory. Enjoy!!
Devon’s Blade by Ken McConnell is an action-packed read almost from the get-go. I’ll admit, I’ve never read story of fighter pilots dogfights before, so I got a little lost with some of the terminology. However, the author does a good enough job of communicating the tenseness of the fights that I didn’t feel like I was missing much.
I absolutely loved the fact that the main characters were strong, flawed and fantastic females. Not all of them were likable, and they didn’t need to be. It just caught me so off-guard – and was such a pleasant surprise – that this book, that could have easily been filled with nothing but men, was female-dominated. Men, whilst present, very much took a backseat for most of the action.
Devon’s Blade was set on an alien planet, years into the future, but honestly this is one of those stories that – with a few changes – could take place almost any time from the invention of fighter planes and on. It’s definitely a good novella to read on a car/plane ride whilst you’re traveling this summer. Highly recommend it!
Disclaimer I received a free copy of this book for review consideration.
Assignment to the primarily water planet Kew was, for most, a punishment. The planet was stunning, hot sun and tropical beaches but also a front line posting where the air supremacy was being held by the enemy alien Votainions. Morale was low and the pilot kill list high. Then a new flight commander arrives to turn things around, Devon Ardel. This is the account of how she does it.
A hard fighting novella with some great characterisations and observation of people's reactions, this story is well written and holds the attention by feeling like a factual report of what happens. Much of the book details air fights and strategies to overcome the better equipped enemy fascinating for anyone actually acquainted iwith aerial dog fights but also surprisingly interesting even for someone, like myself, who knows absolutely nothing about them. It felt frighteningly real.
A quick and easy to read story. Although located in the Star Saga universe, this book can be read as a stand alone without any loss of understanding. However, it has intrigued me into purchasing book one of the saga, Starforgers, which features Devon's earlier exploits. My thanks to Book Review 22 for gifting me a copy of Devon's Blade and so introducing me to what promises to be an exciting series.
Keeps you interested all the way through
I devoured this book in 2 days. I really enjoyed the characters and plot. It was the right mix of science fiction setting and character interaction. I definitely recommend this book.
Fantastic read, love the character, have enjoyed reading about her through many series and look forward to more. Fantastic detail in the combat fights, you really get attached to the squad and feel the loss when you lose someone.
Well done McConnell
This story reads like a good WW2 fighter pilot saga only set in the future. The author did some homework on fighter pilot talk and squadron style activity. The opening lyric to the song Give Me Operations dates back to real song from the WW2 Korea era with some modifications. I enjoyed the ride!
